Strong Man - CD: Lucky Hands In Trying Times

(Andy Hollinden)
I got a spot in the hospital lot
Right beside Goldie’s S.U.V.
She slept a lot on an I.C.U. cot
She’s the way a stepmother ought to be

At first I wasn’t sure if he knew who I was
Sometimes his words didn’t make perfect sense
But he was lucid as I helped him stand
He grabbed my hand, and he said

“Oh, my God
I bet you never thought you would see your old man like this”
Oh, my God
I always just assumed he would be a strong man
Not this

He said, “I’ve worked so hard for all of my life”
At seventy-six, he was exhausted
A full-time man from the age of thirteen
Built fifteen hundred homes in a town of eight thousand

They lowered him down in a hole in the ground
Right beside my dear mother
It seemed best that they would share eternal rest
That’s great for one mom, but where does that leave the other?
